Get ready for Furiosa, the exciting prequel to the Oscar-nominated action film, Mad Max: Fury Road. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, this fifth installment of George Miller’s Mad Max series is all set to hit the 2024 box office. Here’s a look at what we know about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, including its cast, crew, storyline, and a fresh trailer.
WHEN IS FURIOSA COMING OUT?
After the success of Fury Road, Miller and Warner Bros. explored additional stories. Initially planned for a June 2023 release, Furiosa was postponed to May 24, 2024, coinciding with Memorial Day weekend. It will be released alongside The Garfield Movie, with Chris Pratt, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Rumors suggest Furiosa might debut at the Cannes Film Festival, starting May 14, 2024. Fury Road also premiered at Cannes to great praise.
WHO’S CREATING FURIOSA?
George Miller, renowned for directing the Mad Max films and Babe: Pig in the City, returns to direct Furiosa. He co-wrote the script with Nick Lathouris, who also worked on Fury Road.
Margaret Sixel, Miller’s Oscar-winning wife and editor of Fury Road, is back. The Fury Road team, including production designer Colin Gibson, sound mixer Ben Osmo, makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, costume designer Jenny Beavan, and music composer Junkie XL, are also part of Furiosa.
WHO’S IN THE CAST, AND WHAT ROLES DO THEY PLAY?
In Mad Max: Fury Road, Charlize Theron played Imperator Furiosa, joining forces with Tom Hardy’s Mad Max. Neither Theron nor Hardy are in Furiosa, which focuses on Furiosa’s life before meeting Max.
Anya Taylor-Joy, known for The Witch, The Menu, and The Queen’s Gambit, plays a young Furiosa, showing her life from being kidnapped to becoming a warrior in a dystopian world. The film will explore her backstory, including how she lost her arm.
Alyla Browne portrays an even younger Furiosa. Chris Hemsworth appears as a main antagonist, possibly the warlord Dementus. Tom Burke is rumored to play a rival faction leader, potentially a young Immortan Joe. Burke replaced Yahya Abdul-Mateen II due to scheduling conflicts.
Nathan Jones and Angus Sampson reprise their Fury Road roles, and Quaden Bayles joins the cast.
WHAT’S THE STORYLINE?
The film’s official synopsis:
“Young Furiosa is taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers and ends up with the Biker Horde led by Warlord Dementus. As they traverse the Wasteland and encounter The Immortan Joe’s Citadel, Furiosa must endure various challenges while seeking a way back home.”
Expect thrilling vehicle stunts, typical of Mad Max movies. While the first trailer includes CGI, it’s likely not the final version.
WHAT DOES THE TRAILER REVEAL?
Little is known about the movie’s details. The first trailer and images were unveiled at Brazil’s CCXP on November 30. The trailer shows a young Furiosa’s journey from being kidnapped to becoming a fighter, and features confrontations between Hemsworth’s character and Immortan Joe.
The trailer also introduced the film’s new subtitle, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
